Here are a few excerpts and points to remember:
1. "You are considered a "Representative of
Athletics Interest", commonly referred to as a booster, if you have ever:
- been a member of a sports support group or a
booster club.
- made a donations to the U of MN athletics
department.
- arranged for or provided employment for
enrolled student-athletes, or assisted in providing any benefit to enrolled
student-athletes or their families.
- promoted the U of MN athletics program in any
way. "
So, if Parents Club Members are
considered 'boosters', what does that mean?
2. "The University of Minnesota is subject to
penalties for all violations committed by any booster."
3. "In general, anyone not employed by the
University of Minnesota is prohibited from contacting a prospect or prospect's
family to encourage him/her to participate in the University of Minnesota
athletic programs."
4. "In general, you may not provide anything or
make special arrangement for our student-athletes, or their friends or family,
that is not available to the general student population."
5. As a booster, you are prohibited from:
- providing room and/or board or transportation
during the summer for a student-athlete with eligibility remaining.
- entertaining student-athletes or their friends
or relatives (you may not even buy them a cup or coffee or a can of soda)
other than an 'occasional home meal'.
- using the name or picture of a student-athlete
to advertise a commercial product or service.
- providing the use of an automobile for a
student-athlete for any purpose.
- providing an award or gift to a student-athlete
for athletic performance.
- purchasing complimentary admissions from a
current student athlete.
- providing an honorarium to a student-athlete
for a speaking engagement.
- allowing a student-athlete to use your
telephone to make free long distance calls.
- offering anything to a student-athlete in
return for an autograph.
- providing a birthday card or gift to a
student-athlete you invite to your home for his birthday. You may provide
only a meal.
